Drinking mate in St. Petersburg
Russians have a long history associated with tea and maintain their connection to this ancient infusion to this day; surely that's why it wasn't difficult for them to discover and appreciate the properties of yerba mate, and embrace this gift from the Guaraní people of South America as their own.
In St. Petersburg, Russia's "cultural capital," mate consumption has spread significantly. This time, we'll explore three recommended places to enjoy a good mate in this charming city, considered the Jewel of the Baltic.
Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
Among the main attractions of the so-called "Venice of the North" are its magnificent cathedrals and Orthodox churches with Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance facades; among them, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, or the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, undoubtedly stands out. This temple on the banks of the Griboyedova River offers a splendid view day and night, and what better way to admire it than with a good cup of sweet or bitter mate.
The Field of Mars
The Field of Mars is a very open space with large expanses of grass, ideal in the summer for sunbathing, running, relaxing, and of course, perfect for drinking mate! Even in winter, this is one of the most beautiful places in St. Petersburg. It's located in the city center and frequently hosts evening shows with hundreds of lanterns, in which anyone can participate.
The Summer Garden
This is the oldest garden in the city, in the style of Versailles in Paris, located between the Fontanka and Moika rivers and the Swan Canal. It's smaller and more enclosed than its neighboring Champ de Mars, but boasts numerous water fountains, statues, and a high tourist influx. For lovers of the tranquility of nature, this is undoubtedly an ideal spot for a break and a warm mate.
Where to buy yerba mate in St. Petersburg
Just like in Moscow, it won't be difficult to find yerba mate in St. Petersburg. You can find it at some kiosks in the city center and it's even served as a side dish in some cafes.
