In addition to chocolate, cuckoo clocks, and yodeling, today's Switzerland, a country with four languages, offers unique travel, alpine activities, and urban culture.A country so diverse where you can drink a famous Argentine beverage, whether in winter or summer, you can try: Mate.
The consumption of mate dates back to the Guaraní people (native indigenous people who lived in some South American countries), as confirmed by the research of essayist and journalist Amaro Villanueva. They chewed the leaves directly or placed them in a gourd with water and sipped. In fact, the word "mate" comes from the Guaraní word "Caa-mate" ("Caa" means plant or herb, and "mate" refers to the gourd in which they drank it). Other peoples such as the Incas, the Charrúas, and even the Araucanians adopted mate through trade with the Guaraní. For the indigenous people, the mate tree was a sacred gift from the gods, and in fact, mate had a special and spiritual significance for them, in addition to its nutritional value.
Thanks to its virtues and benefits, mate soon became popular among the Spanish who came to colonize South America. The yerba mate began to be transported from its place of origin to the entire territory under Spanish rule, and the Jesuits, in particular, were responsible for widely expanding its use by including mate in their reservations, although they drank it in the form of tea bags rather than with a straw. They had also discovered that the plant germinated only in this region of the world, a secret confirmed half a century later by the French naturalist Aimé Bonpland.
