Mate preparation is unique. To make a good mate, you first need to master the process.

To begin preparing a good mate, you need yerba mate, whether natural or flavored with fruit. However, the most widely consumed yerba mate in the world is composed solely of dried leaves, crushed leaves, and the stem from the yerba mate.
Then, all you need is a container, also called a mate, and a bombilla, which is unique and used exclusively for mate.
Preparation begins by heating water. The ideal water temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees Celsius. During this time, it's recommended to fill the mate three-quarters full with yerba mate. Next, the most specific step of the process: Place the container upside down, covering it with your hand to prevent the yerba from spilling out, and shake it to prevent dust from accumulating at the bottom. Then, return the mate to its original position, ensuring the yerba is tilted over the side of the container, forming a sort of hole on the other side. Then, pour warm water into this space to moisten the bottom.
This way, the yerba mate expresses its flavors.
Finally, insert the bombilla, pressing it in so it doesn't move (it should be blocked by the yerba). The mate is finally ready to drink. Traditionally, mate is prepared with hot water. However, some less experienced palates add a little sugar or another sweetener, a healthy alternative to soften its characteristic flavor. In summer, a refreshing variation called tereré is prepared with cold water.
